Fosters Solicitors is pleased to announce two important updates to its leadership team, marking both the continuation of valued experience within the firm and the appointment of new representation at Board level.
After an exceptional career spanning nearly 34 years with the firm – including almost three decades as a Partner – Iain McClay has retired as a Fosters’ equity partner and Board member.
While stepping down from these senior leadership roles, Iain will continue to play a vital part within the firm as our Head of Family & Mediation and as a consultant. In this capacity, he will continue to share his extensive expertise, supporting individuals and families across a wide range of Family Law matters.

Commenting on his retirement from the partnership, Fosters’ Chief Executive, Chris Brown, said: “A leading lawyer in the area of family law, the partnership would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Iain for over three decades of dedicated service. He has played a key role in shaping Fosters into the firm it is today, while also mentoring many young lawyers throughout his career.
“Although he is retiring from the partnership after a short sabbatical, we are delighted that he will be returning to Fosters as a consultant. We are incredibly grateful that we will continue to benefit from his expertise and wealth of knowledge in family law and mediation.”
Iain McClay added: “I’m very fortunate to have had such a rewarding career as a family lawyer and mediator. It has been a privilege to support and represent so many individuals and families over the years. I am delighted to continue my involvement as a consultant within the family law team.
“I would particularly like to thank Sandra, Tessa, Sarah-Jayne and Sally, with whom I have worked so closely with in different periods of my career. I wish the Board, and everyone at Fosters every success and happiness for the future.”
Alongside this, the firm is delighted to announce that Partner David Gabell has joined the Board with immediate effect.
Since joining Fosters in 2018, David has made a significant impact, becoming a partner in May 2023 after successfully developing the firm’s Medical Negligence department into one of the region’s leading specialist teams.

Welcoming David to the Board, Chris Brown said: “Throughout his time at Fosters, David has built a strong personal reputation as a solicitor and has successfully grown a regionally recognised Medical Negligence department. He has also taken on important management responsibilities within both his department and the wider firm.
“We are very much looking forward to him bringing his skills and insight to the Board as we continue to grow Fosters in line with our Business Plan.”
Commenting on this news, David Gabell said: “After eight wonderful years at Fosters, I am thrilled to be joining the Board. My time here, particularly over the past few years as Partner, has been defined by the brilliant colleagues and clients I work with every day.
“I thank the board for their unwavering support over the years to help me build the Medical Negligence team to what it is today. To my team, past and present, thank you for your excellence and for making our shared vision a reality. You are the heartbeat of our success. There is a lot of hard work and innovation on the horizon, and I’m excited to help lead Fosters into this next chapter.”
