Family Legal Aid Administrator and Billing Clerk

The role

The Fosters’ Family & Children team are committed to assisting some of the most vulnerable people in society and representing people under legal aid. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with an interest in family and children matters who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment as part of a busy and expanding department.

As a Legal Aid Administrator and Billing Clerk in our Family & Children team, you will provide essential support to our lawyers, assisting in bill preparation, claiming and paying out funds for experts and Counsel and liaising with the Legal Aid Agency to ensure the prompt payment of our legal aid bills. This is an excellent opportunity for someone keen to develop their career in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Main responsibilities:

  • Preparing completed matters for billing by our costs draftsman and then liaising with the Legal Aid Agency to ensure prompt payment.
  • Acting as a point of liaison with the Legal Aid Agency on funding applications, amendments, evidence requests, and case progression, ensuring matters run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Claiming invoices from experts and arranging payment out.
  • Allocating counsel’s fees.
  • Claiming regular payments on account.
  • Assisting fee earners with Legal Aid applications and amendments from time to time.
  • Ensuring full compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Liaising professionally and efficiently with clients, courts, and other third parties.
  • Providing administrative support as needed.

Previous experience in a similar role and experience of using CCMS/Apply for Civil Legal Aid is preferable but not essential for the right candidate.

The following are essential:

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems.
  • A proactive and client-focused approach.
