Fosters Solicitors

Community Hero – Norwich City v Coventry City

This month, alongside our partners Norwich City FC, we welcome Sandra Hughes to Carrow Road as our Fosters Solicitors’ Community Hero for January, nominated by Alzheimer’s Society.

Sandra has been volunteering with the dementia charity for over 12 years after retiring as a psychiatric nurse.

On being nominated as a Community Hero, Sandra said: “It was quite a shock when I heard, but such a lovely surprise to know that my work with the society is appreciated.

“I first became aware of opportunities within the Alzheimer’s Society through a friend and progressed through to becoming a Dementia Friends Ambassador.

“After retiring, I needed something to do that made me feel useful and able to use my skills and interests.

“I deliver talks to members of the community in all schools, youth clubs, pubs and many other places.

“If you are not a Dementia Friend then I can heartily recommend it, it really can make a difference in your workplace, community or neighbourhood.”

Sandra also volunteers with local dementia support groups or cafes that provide safe supportive spaces for individuals and families affected by dementia.

“Through all of this, I have made long-lasting friendships with others and I just love meeting so many different people on my travels in the Norfolk area,” she added.

“Volunteering within the Alzheimer’s Society has opened up a completely new part of my life and has increased my confidence, and I am very proud of what I have achieved.

“The recognition by my colleagues is amazing, especially as I am doing something that I absolutely love and enjoy. It certainly doesn’t feel like work, mostly it is fun.”

Tarryn Stuart, regional fundraiser for Norfolk and Suffolk at Alzheimer’s Society said: “Everyone at Alzheimer’s Society is incredibly grateful to Sandra for her invaluable support across all her volunteering roles.

“From delivering Dementia Friends sessions in her local community, to raising awareness of dementia and the local support services available and representing Alzheimer’s Society at fundraising events, Sandra does it all.

“She is not only a volunteer; she is a passionate advocate who changes lives through education and empathy. Her commitment reflects the very essence of what it means to be a Community Hero.

“We are incredibly proud and fortunate to have Sandra as part of our team.”

About our Community Hero initiative

Since 2019, Fosters Solicitors have joined our partners Norwich City Football Club in highlighting the great work of local individuals and organisations in our community.

Every month during the football season, a ‘Community Hero’ is chosen for a selected matchday – providing an opportunity to showcase that person(s) or initiatives selfless work or important community campaign.

Previous Community Heroes have included young carers, veterans, equality campaigners, charity fundraisers and their beneficiaries.
