Fosters Solicitors

Support group creator named Community Hero

Our Fosters Solicitors Community Hero for April is Sam McGinn, creator and organiser of local men’s mental health support group The Mend.

The Mend group is designed to give men more support with day to day struggles, creating a safe space where “it’s OK to not be OK”.

The group meets evert Wednesday at the Norwich VR Escape Rooms, welcoming any men over the age of 16.

On what inspired him to start the group, Sam said: “Four years ago, I nearly died in a motorbike accident and I wanted to start making a difference. I believe that’s why I survived, why I am still here.

“My biggest drive to succeed is to simply do better for my mum; I can never take back what she went through during that time and for me to be able to use this group to start making a difference is the key.

“So, I’m extremely grateful and overwhelmed at being recognised for this; it took my breath away a bit!

“As well as the group that attend week in and week out, I’d also like to thank Stefan Markovic of the Norwich VR escape rooms for allowing me to use the space the past year and a half, as well as Adrian and Maria Joyce, landlords of the Temple Bar for always supporting me and allowing me to use their pub for events.”

Sam was nominated by one of his group’s attendees, Richard Walsh, who said: “I cannot think of anyone else more deserving of this award, as a person who has gone out of his way just to help improve the lives of others.

“He has created a very special group of people, who, before this, had nobody and nowhere else to go.

“He asks for nothing in return, even though he pays for it out of his own pocket.

“It has definitely changed my life and I know it has for plenty of other people too.”

About our Community Hero initiative

Since 2019, Fosters Solicitors have joined our partners Norwich City Football Club in highlighting the great work of local individuals and organisations in our community.

Every month during the football season, a ‘Community Hero’ is chosen for a selected matchday – providing an opportunity to showcase that person(s) or initiatives selfless work or important community campaign.

Previous Community Heroes have included young carers, veterans, equality campaigners, charity fundraisers and their beneficiaries.

Would you like to nominate a Community Hero? Please go to canaries.co.uk/club/heroes to tell us all about them!
