Is it legal to dispose of paint in my general waste?

With the better weather having arrived, many of us are taking the opportunity to redecorate our houses and brighten up our gardens.

However, most people don’t know that there are laws surrounding the disposal of paint, and that you cannot simply pop it in your general waste – but don’t worry, in this Is it legal to… we’re here to help!

Why can’t I dispose of paint in my general waste?

Paint is categorised as a hazardous waste, due to the harmful chemicals it contains, and therefore its disposal is regulated under The Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) (Amendments) Regulations 2016.

If you dispose of your paint through general waste this could cause immense damage to the environment.

How can I safely dispose of paint?

  1. Dry out your paint – your local authority will have tips on how to do this. Once it is completely dry, you may dispose of it in your general waste.
  2. If in liquid form, or old paint, it’s safer to check your local authority’s recycling centres for their hazardous waste days. Typically, this is only available a few days of the year, however, they will accept any domestic hazardous waste which you have left over from your latest makeover (e.g. paint, paint stripper, paint thinner etc) for free, and dispose of it safely and in accordance with the law.

What happens if I have put liquid paint in my general waste?

You could be found guilty of an offence and face a fine of up to £2,500. It’s always best to check with your local authority, or recycling centre, on what’s best to do in your circumstances.
