Our story

Founding of Fosters

The birth of Fosters

In November 1761, William Foster (aged 23) qualified as an attorney and established his own practice at 29 St Giles Broad Street in Norwich, marking the official beginning of what would become Fosters Solicitors.

Expansion and relocation

Key early growth moments include the addition of partners (like William Unthank in 1786) and the firm’s move in 1798 from St Giles to larger premises at 11 Queen Street, reflecting its early success and expansion.

Establishing presence at Bank Place

After multiple leadership transitions through the 1800s (including the death of the founder in 1810 and later moving premises when Bank Place was developed), the firm solidified its presence in Norwich’s legal district - culminating in a move to Bank Place near the modern Royal Hotel site.

Modern growth and new headquarters

By the 1990s, Fosters had grown significantly, expanding offices across Norwich and opening a new headquarters. In 2000, their new Norwich headquarters at William House, Bank Plain was opened (officially inaugurated by Cherie Booth QC), cementing their modern identity and expanded operations.

250th anniversary and new partnerships

2011 marked an important milestone: Fosters celebrated its 250th anniversary, strengthened by partnerships such as with Norwich City Football Club and the acquisition of additional firms (e.g., Russell Steward), underscoring its longevity and continued relevance after more than two and a half centuries.

National recognition

Today, Fosters is recognised regionally and nationally, listed in The Legal 500 and holding customer service accreditations - a testament to its evolution from a single attorney practice to a major law firm.
